You cant possibly put Aliero back at FCT, all he is doing is recouping the funds he spent to get made minister. On of the other two may be better. It is hard to disagree with this point of view. Basically, we've been attempting to build something on nothing! Hence, I think trying fix roads, electricity etc. is a losing proposition in Nigeria of today.

Of course, one recognize the need for stop gap measures while the social fabric is restored; but I truly believe that only a truly bold visionary leadership that can get Nigerians back to square one to determine the nature, shape and structure of the country they want, as well as a restoration of the social contract between the governed and the governors, will truly solve fundamental problems that bedevil us over a long run. Some call it national conference, others call it a dialogue. I however believe strongly that you cannot create a progressive nation without some sort of determination by its constituents on these fundamental questions.

Of course the alternative is a benevolent dictatorship, where I happen to be the dictator! God Bless Nigeria.

I have been travelling around Nigeria since last March. And from my encounters on the roadI would add these to the list:

1. Sobi Hill, Ilorin (Kwara State): it must be the only location in Nigeria where christian and islamic worshippers share the same worship space. No rancour;no bad belle. Everybody respects the other's religion.many months after I stumbled on it, the experience remains indelible

2. Kanta Museum, Birnin Kebbi (Kebbi State): The fishing festival may be the draw her but my most remarkable spot is the Centuries' old kanta museum and the adjoining Cemetry, where all previous kings of the kingdom are interred. I doubt if there is any place like that elsewhere in Nigeria.

Ms. T, thanks for sharing this outlook and the link to the Committee's website.

I have to agree with DonCasiragi's statement about 'blueprints for development' and the countless number of them that have circled around the country forever. As you note, Lagos has become a shining example not because it miraculously transformed itself overnight with magic, but because instead of more talk/discussion, action came into play. That is why the governor of that state is lauded for solving what in actuality are small problems. Unlike our federal government, Lagos State has started tackling smaller problems, creating the right psychology in its residents so as to encourage them to do their part in solving the larger problems, hence the beginnings of a state-wide transformation, which, if not allowed to be sabotaged by naysayers, will be a shining example for future Lagosians and hopefully, all Nigerians.

So, in essence, what I am looking for is clear evidence, no matter how small, of progress. After looking at the Commitee's site, I am struck by the incredible amount of rhetoric, but will continue to dig deeper to find examples of details/results. I am specifically looking at the federal government for this, as certain states have shown that they can start to make positive changes. This administration would do well to have a website highlighting successes and keeping up with bi-monthly updates on said progress because people like me who want to look closely at where change can be made and laud the positive when it happens can only be disappointed when the information we seek is non-existent or guarded so closely, it becomes a waste of time to find.

Guess, I had to update that. 2005 is now a long time ago.

Now working as a Project Manager with an Oil/Gas concern..doing consulting mostly. I have since completed my Grad studies too..side by side working (phew!)

In the past few years, my focus has been getting some real experience but I have lately turned my attention to doing that next big thing. While I am working on my professional (read back up plan) certifications at the moment, I am also seeding couple of start ups mostly in W/Africa.

Am excited about these projects and just some shameless plug ins: a innovation services firm in Lagos ( www.loftyincltd.biz ) , an energy services concern in Takoradi, Ghana ( www.shorebasegroup.com ) and assisting with growing the family business to that next place where it all comes together eventually...central to this is building a secondary school where entrepreneurship is incorporated in the curriculum ( www.sec-edu.com) .

My passion remains turning simple ideas into commercial miracles, and I hope to pursue that for good in few years when I finish working on tightening the lose ends of my back up plan- which I am living now.

Anyway, per the 20-20 things- how many blueprints for development do we need before just doing something? These sort of documents are truly not lacking in Nigeria, dating back to the 5 year development plans we proposed at Independence and other countless such plans that succeeded it.

Tosin, I think it is too much maths that is killing wall street..and not so honest mathematics too. All these counter party, derivatives and other complex instruments create a situation where a bunch of neophytes are chasing what they hardly understand- and understand at the end, it is 99% of the population that have no clue that is actually putting their money on the line.

The other day I was watching CNBC and one goon was suggesting people sell volatility..I turned to my friend and asked - which company is that? What does volatility make? LOL..apparently, volatility is the VIX index that measures volatility in market, but pray tell- how does that relate to the manufacture of hard goods, creation of wealth and the great capitalist complex Adam smith once dreamed of? A friend commented recently and said- America manufacutures nothing but debt. So true.

Some notes:
More and Electric power and money leaking:
Basically lamenting runaway costs for 6 power plants that were begun under Obasanjo.

More on Electric Power targets :
Basically renewing campaign promise to declare a State Of Emergency for electricity, and targeting 50,000MW production by 2020, not by 2015 as promised last year (this is unacceptable, as it condemns the country to poverty.)

More on French nuclear (wow, it's like I see the future or somethin' ) .
It has seemed to me for a while that EDF, Areva, companies experienced in nuclear power plant development might be good candidates for developing Nigeria's power plants. Now it seems other countires are doing the same: I read somewhere in the news China is having nuclear power plants developed, though the time scale was pretty long.
My concern now is the negotiation. One solution to that, and to corruption is benchmarking - Nigeria can contractually peg its costs to the costs of other similar power development contracts.

50,000MW by 2015 was the goal just one year ago. Now it's the goal for 2020. Nigeria needs power now, not by 2020.

I support the State of Emergency, and I support foreign/French industry being partners as we get electric power.

Who are these "French businessmen?" - EDF executives, perhaps? That would be comforting compared to dealing through third-party businessmen.

Who represents Nigeria in these partnerships for power production? I don't know...

Why isn't that an interesting observation. Quite frankly, I think that UNCONTROLLED POPULATION INCREASES are solely responsible for "hunger, malnutrition" and questionable food policies. Everywhere I go in Kenya, it's the poor (and I don't mean to sound alarmist or mean spirited) who are producing so many kids. In fact, the Youths (age 16-35) in Kenya make up 70% of the population. Combine that with a high rate of unemployment, social unrest, and SOMETIMES, political instability (essentially because of over population and lack of access to certain resources hoarded by rich corrupt politicians et al) and well, you got a ticking time bomb just waiting to be exploited in that illiterate game we call TRIBALISM.

But what most people fail to grasp is that there are TOO MANY DAMN POOR PEOPLE HAVING BABIES. It's as simple as that. Contrast Kenya to Singapore and Malaysia back in the early 70s. All 3 were at the same stage of development.

It's ironic that you need a drivers license in order to drive a car. Ditto for a pilot's license to fly an airplane; or an MD to do open heart surgery. Yet, it's EASY as pie (pun intended) to produce a living breathing entity otherwise known as a BABY. It's too easy (and I'll add, fun too!). And therein lies the problem!

So, all those peeps at the World Bank can speculate on the merits of using sovereign wealth funds. But unless society tackles the problem of disproportionate population increases, we're phucked!!!

Just look at countries like Mexico, Brazil, Egypt, Nigeria et al with their very large POOR populations. Will they ever turn the corner ECONOMICALLY? I just don't think enough jobs can be created fast enough to employ those masses - even in this era of globalization. I'm not afraid to say this. What about our LEADERS? Are they gonna step up to the plate and sound the ALARM?

Thankfully, Canada is a very large country with only 30 million peeps, and all that oil out West and on the Atlantic side (Hibernia) is helping to push the Canadian dollar ever higher. But its population has always hovered around 30-32 million. And that's my point. Uncontrolled birth rates in a developing country, high illiteracy, and a POOR or fragile economy will always lead to a life of misery.

To conclude, control the out-of-control birth rates, and there'll be less of everything: Fighting, corruption, tribalism, natural disasters.

I've paid a huge price in the broadband realm by being in East Africa for the past 28 months. I'm soo addicted to high speed Internet that it isn't funny. Hopefully the 3 separate undersea fibre optic cables that will connect to Mombasa next year will change all of that. Then again, a serious problem here is infrastructure. Sometimes in Karen (a Nairobi suburb where I sometimes/mostly stay), the power will go out once it starts to rain for a prolonged period. Not good! And it's not in anyone's best interest that idiots (Telkom Kenya technicians I presume?) are stealing copper wire, melting it, and then exporting it due to sky high prices. How lovely!

Why is it so slow and scarce? Corruption has a lot to do with it in the sense that things are not truly OPEN. Telkom Kenya is so inefficient yet the government gives it carte blance when it comes to data access. So other providers have to pay some ridiculous "local loop" charge. I say we follow South Korea's lead and make every company compete on a level playing field. One other thing...both mobile phone operators and Telkom are terrified of cheap Internet access and technologies such as VoIP because it eats into their ridiculous profits. TIA: This is Africa.

And the Brain Drain continues. Brilliant foreign students coupled with the SERIOUS lack of interest (thanks to the Idiot Box culture; being smart is "stupid" mentality; etc.) by American high school students in Maths & Sciences is only going to increase this pattern. All I hope is that said students realize a duty to their native countries in terms of helping the motherland ascend both economically and socially. Otherwise, the motherland will never truly realize her true potential.

Come to think of it, most of the TAs I saw in the Engineering and Science departments at a lot of universities in Canada were either of Middle Eastern (Arab, Persian), Asian or African origin. The invasion has begun! :-)

In a bid to give the South East the best of its telecoms services, Globacom Telecom Limited has launched the Enugu-Awka section of its optic fibre cable backbone which it said will bring about enhanced data services and high speed transmission of point-to-point in voice telecommunication.

Ag Chief Operations Officer of Glo Broad Access, Martins Olowonihi told newsmen in Enugu that the backbone is a better alternative for bulk voice and data transmission for users, adding that it has immunity from thunderstorms which can disrupt services.

Olowonihi who said that the fibre optic was aimed at giving its subscribers the best of telecoms as could be the case all over the world, also disclosed that the company's fixed line network would soon commence commercial services .

He said that when the fixed lines services take-off, it would transform the under-developed fixed line telephony in the country.

Olowonihi also disclosed that 300,000 lines would be available in at least 13 major cities across the country during the initial phase.

He said that with the commissioning, the people of Enugu state and neigbouring towns would enjoy a revolution in voice and data transfers.

He said, Globacom's vision is to become the largest and most successful telecoms company in Africa . We will soon take a giant step towards the realization of this vision by rolling out services in some West African countries beginning with the Republic of Benin where we won a licence last year.

Enugu State Governor, Mr Sullivan Chime who cut the tape to declare the fibre optic/switch centre open described Globacom as one telecoms service provider which has made Nigeria and Nigerians proud.

Commending the management of the company for the giant strides recorded in the historyof the company's telecoms services, Chime said that Globacom is one company that has contributed in making telecoms services easily available to Nigerians.

He said that the company has shown serious commitment in contributing to the growth of the nation's economy through its services.

Chime declared the willingness of his administration to partner with Globacom in every sphere, adding that it was amazing to see the state of the art equipment installed for the optic fiber backbone.

I think the answer is to go with an engineer (quite a few around this blog and in Lagos too) and ask questions and build a rough improvement. the cost will likely be a little time (week or two) and money (time and a few recycled materials.) If they don't chase you away from their business, you may have fun and learn a lot about distributing building materials on the Island.

I hear you about the evaluations.

That's not "normal" rent. It's just that you could find these markets where prices are so high compared to what most Nigerians would spend in their lifetimes.
I saw a shirt in Victoria Island the same week, nice designer but not particularly new or impressive. (Specifically: White chiffon shirt with a few white chiffon roses, forgot the label, but it had hanger damage at the shoulders. ) I saw the price tag and thought it was OK in Naira. Well, that wasn't the price in Naira. It was - get this - British Pounds. (multiply by 250) Yep.

Yeah, maybe someone should go there with a camera and makeup. Are you a photographer? I'm an agent. Better than this sand business.

If that was my job, I'd say, why don't we just carry the pans from the canoe to the truck once - when the buyers' trucks arrive, or I'd make like the ancient Egyptians ;) and do sth with a conveyor belt or a ramp and pulleys...and then I'd surely get fired either because the machine worked (<1% chance) or because I had the audacity to complain about carrying the pans all over the place (99% chance). So even if I'm the sharpest guy in the world, I won't think like that ;) A lot of times labour replaces smarts/machines/electricity in Nigeria cos labour is cheap.

first of all i think this article is really interesting. about the employee evaluation, one would really have to take it seriously because when applying to other jobs, employment evaluation is usually looked at.

I never knew rent in nigeria was that expensive...omg 20,000 per day, that is ridiculous, so how much is it going to be per month.

The key to passing the SAT is:

If you have even a flicker of doubt, DO NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION. seriously. points are deducted for failing a question but nothing is deducted for skipping it.

Your Essay is extremely important. You don't have to use big words, you just have to have a strong argument, and persuasively illustrate your points to support your argument. Seriously, I wrote something about a corn farm for my SAT, and I got 2010.

Review of the Career Fair, by ChinMan:
The event was fun and enlightening for me. I had a few reservations about the event though, in terms of the organization and implementation.

First, the evening of the networking kind of sucked as the room was cramped and the general atmosphere did not make or welcome proper networking, to make matters worse a reception should involve food not just white and red wine, anyway.

Then, the subsequent so-called lunched were turkey or ham sandwiches that were neither filling or tasteful and did not fit what I expected a seminar hosted and co-sponsored by such multi-nationals as Chevron, GE, Exxon, Shell, etc.

Then, it was unfortunate that the summit did not do a good job of first of all pre-screening individuals and providing them with enough info about the requirements and expectations of the companies, also the students were not made aware of the skills and talents the specific companies were looking for in their job description. For example some companies were recruiting only for their home countries which made some other companies exempt for consideration.

While they had a good mix of companies, I believe they could have done better and gotten a stronger pool of candidates if they diversified the companies to include not just oil & gas, power, banking, mining and manufacturing but also companies or institutions relating to academia, health care, international relations and development, consulting, construction, business development solutions, IT, etc.

Also opening up the summit to recruit even people that are not from the diaspora including African Americans, Caucasians, Asians, etc, just to widen slightly the pool of candidates.

Besides all this the summit was good. I enjoyed specifically the opportunity to network with like minded individuals who have a vision and plan to go back home to do something or contribute to development.

It also gave me an opportunity to discover the opportunities that exist and are available in Africa and what I should start doing in order to be a more competitive candidate.

I was able to secure an interview with one of the companies...they work in manufacturing and marketing fertilizers, this I guess is closest to International Development as you can get...I circulated your resume as much as I could (THANK YOU)...Some companies were not taking resumes either because they were not taking Nigerians or they were not taking resumes of people who were not invited to the summit.

The Nigerian "business ecosystems" project never got off the ground.
Visit alibaba.com to get an idea of the kind of services I had in mind. In terms of look and feel, it should be like youtube, video dominating and SO EASY to use, and in terms of purpose, it should be alibaba - an efficient e-business hub.

I'm not particularly suited to building this; I can list many people better suited to it than I. For one thing, how much do I know about information systems/software/databases?

Still there's a need, and I'll think of THE EASY WAY to do this: like by pugging into other applications or something.

Amy Smith was really cool. She is excited about technology and devices that solve those little nagging problems that screw up the quality of life of the less moneyed majority of the world. She is a MacArthur fellow, which is a cool thing to be. SHe's also an academic who knew early on she didn't care to get her PhD.

The talk by the economist from Belize was also memorable; after outlining some of his thoughts on how to ACTUALLY develop a place as a project (Likely material from his book: THE POWER OF GREED with the intro - Why do so many international development projects fail? Is it because poor regions are inherently corrupt, or is it because developers and donors do not properly take into account how local survival mechanisms work?), after delivering his prepared notes, he took questions, such as, well, when is one's work done, if you're a do-gooder living in a foreign country? You know what he said? When you start thinking everybody doesn't make sense, everybody's crazy, because that means you're tired.

Well, I believe College is not for everybody. What college does in most cases is to instill in you discipline that you might not have experienced in High School and for most people who choose to go to College based on their own decision, it leads them to a better life by teaching them skills and attributes that will prepare them for a career of their dreams. The case can be made that, you can probably learn most of what you learn in College outside of College and in some cases you probably dont need to learn any of the garbage they teach you in College to be successful, I would buy that point to an extent. I would argue that College based on my experience is an important tool for me to learn more and understand the skills and attributes that I would require to be successful in my chosen career; to work on hands on activities that are intellectually stimulating, realistically applicable, and academically fulfilling; and above all to meet the standard requirement that society requires for me to have to be be considered credible and respected as an expert in my field of practice.

Wonderfully written, great topic. I had the privelege to intern at a place where I noticed to my amazement that one of the senior employees was on Paternity Leave. To be honest, I never knew that it was possible to go on Paternity Leave, but it was a delight to experience that. He actually had I believe 2 whole months of maternity leave. I believe our culture is beginning to realize the importance of parents staying home to rear and mentor their children starting at an early age. I believe the fruits of this generation is a testament that our children should experience their first few years under parental supervision, care, nurturing, and guidance. I have nothing against baby sitters, but time and time again, children that spend more time outside of the parental home are more likely to be antisocial, timid, and at danger to develop poor habits.

Not necessarily indigenous languages, I guess, so English, French, Arabic are likely in top six, especially if we're thinking "book people."

Didn't know Twi was huge...agree with Swahili for sure. Maybe some kind of pidgin? Maybe Hausa will make the cut.

Probably the technologies need to be voice/image based, not text.

Mostly, the text-heavy communications are matched with English/French/Arabic, while colloquial languages don't match with writing that much...Like I find it hard to read pidgin, or type Yoruba...
